What is the wealth of Australian Households? And does it matter? Is it true as some have claimed that household wealth is climbing exponentially? For everyone, or just a few?
We have a lot of data on household wealth, and a great deal more noise. The ABS has two series that cover the question, and the Melbourne Institute another - the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) longitudinal study. They all give different results.

Since leaving the public service in 2014, Joe has been involved in a private sector startup, but has remained an active voice in public policy discourse, contributing to the work of the Productivity Commission and the Grattan Institute on inter-generational equity issues. While he shares many of the general concerns raised by Ken Henry and Saul Eslake, the numbers matter. Joe will challenge conventional narratives around tax reform and make a case for a different way forward.
